Former NBA Baller Charles Smith Shot

Former NBA and Georgetown University player Charles E. Smith, IV has been shot at a home in Maryland this evening. Local officials have not been able to locate a shooter at this time but have received statements from witnesses that the shooting motive was driven by gambling debts incurred by Smith.

Smith was named Big East Player of the Year in 1988-1989 when he posted 19ppg and 4rpg and seemed to really be on his way to a very promising career. Although promising, Smith was undrafted out of Georgetown but played his way into the NBA when he was signed by Boston. Smith played 1989-1991 and appeared in a total of 65 games with the Celtics then from 1995-1996 he landed in Minnesota where he played in 29 games. Smith has a career average of 2.5 ppg in the NBA. Smith ran into trouble in 1991 when he was charged and subsequently convicted a year later of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crime.

Smith, 42, remains in a  local Prince Georges County hospital with non life threatening injuries.
